Folks of all ages participated, from youth
To more experienced members of the congregation.
After nailing the walls together on the ground, everyone participated in ‘raising the walls’, and steadying them until they were braced.
Melissa will put in 200 sweat equity hours helping to build her house.
At the end of the first day, the walls were up.
On the second day of building, a group from sponsors National Progressive Baptist Convention came to help.
The first task is to bring lumber up from the street to the build site. Here Kashida Carson, armoriana Brown, Alicia Brown and Lewis Brown unload the pick-up.
At the end of the day, the house was enclosed and almost ready for roof trusses.
Some folks from Habitat for Humanity International even came out to help. Here Shannon, Melody, Jennifer and Susan nail the plywood firmly to the studs. They also began on othe porch.
Pattillo Construction volunteers hoisted the trusses into place for the roof...
and added decking so it is ready for shingles.
Jack DeVos, a crew leader and DeKalb Habitat board president shows volunteers from Carlton Fields Attorneys at Law how to put on the siding.
Other volunteers worked on the roof, putting on shingles. Angels Ligouri, a Habitat Board Member, is careful on the roof.
Meanwhile, still others worked inside the house.
Next comes the sheetrock on the inside...
and siding and painting on the outside.
From top to bottom
and in between, two coats of paint are put on the outside.
Westwood College design students helped with the landscaping, including a retaining wall.
Interior painting is also complete.
Sod and plantings were completed at the end of September.
Cleaning and polishing are the last tasks, and the house
is almost finished and the workers can rest.
The Dedication on October 19 was a wonderful celebration.
Melissa presented the sponsors with a framed plaque thanking them for the way they blessed her family. She thanked all who worked on the house.
After the ceremony, Melissa and her children relaxed on their front porch.
