What is a sponsor?
A sponsor is an individual or organization (or a group of people or organizations) which commits to fund all the expenses connected with constructing a Habitat home. The sponsor (s) may also commit to providing the labor needed to build the home.

What amount of funding is needed to sponsor a home?
Sponsors contribute to DeKalb Habitat $100,000 for a three-bedroom or four-bedroom home. All homes in DeKalb County are currently meeting County Code for square footage requirements. As such, lots zoned R75 will have a minimum of 1,600 square feet of living space; lots zones R-100 have 2,000 sq ft of living space. (In-kind donations are accepted and sponsors receive credit.)

How many people are needed to construct a home? When does the work take place? How much time is required?
Generally between 20-25 laborers are needed to work each Saturday for sixteen consecutive Saturdays to construct a Habitat house. This does not include the professionals who work throughout the week performing the more technical construction tasks.

What assistance does Habitat provide the sponsor in constructing the home?
DeKalb Habitat will provide land and must approve and select the family. We may also provide help with coordinating and scheduling volunteers and provide a professional construction manager to supervise non skilled construction volunteers. Other construction support may be provided depending on the needs of the project. The construction manager is also at the construction site on Saturdays to coordinate the day’s activities. The construction manager and the Construction Committee meets with the sponsor in advance of construction to organize their volunteers.

Who can be a sponsor?
Any organization can be a sponsor. We have had churches, civic groups, businesses, and foundations as sponsors.

Can an organization cosponsor a home if it does not have enough labor or funds to construct a home?
Yes. Many of our homes have been built by organizations working together.

Why should my organization sponsor a home?
Because thousands of people in our community live in substandard housing and your organization can do something about it. As you give, you will receive. As the members of your organization work side-by-side along with the selected family, your organization will be united—perhaps as never before—by this life giving partnership.

How do I (we) become a sponsor?
Contact us at DeKalb Habitat, express your interest in sponsorship, and leave us your name and contact information. We will respond, answer any questions you may have and be glad to work with you.
