APPLY FOR A HOME

How To Apply for a Home

Habitat for Humanity – DeKalb is a home ownership program that builds homes in partnership with people in need. Those interested in partnering with Habitat for Humanity must meet the qualifications of Need, Ability to Pay and Willingness to Partner.    Please see other qualifications below.

Our Application session for 2012 is currently closed.

Please watch this page for the next application period dates.

The first step in the application process is to fill out and return a Pre-Application form.   When we are accepting applications, we will have a form on this web site for you to print out.

The second step is to attend a New Homeowner Orientation Meeting . You will be notified of the time and place after we receive your Pre-Application form. At that meeting you will be asked to complete a longer Application and submit certain documents. This information will be evaluated and a home visit made before Family Partners are chosen for the program. Family Partners join with DeKalb Habitat to build the house. Each family is required to put in 250 Sweat Equity hours working on houses.

When the Family Partner's home is finished, Habitat for Humanity will sell the home to the Family Partner with a no interest, no profit loan. The homeowner pays for the home with monthly payments that include the mortgage, home insurance, and taxes over the life of the loan, typically 20-30 years. Total payments are usually less than the homeowner has previously paid in rent.

We do business in accordance with federal fair lending laws and do not turn away applicants on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, handicap, or familial status.

Homeowner Classes

DeKalb Habitat offers homeowner education classes for our Family Partners.  We do this so that our homeowners are successful.  Classes include  Home Maintenance Classes and Family Finance Classes.  Family Partners get sweat equity hours for attending classes.  These classes are required before the family can purchase a Habitat house.
